Rotherham grooming survivor continues to seek justice after convictions

At Switalskis, we understand that for many survivors of child sexual exploitation, a criminal conviction is not the end of their journey.

The emotional impact of abuse can last for many years, and legal developments that happen after a conviction can bring back feelings of uncertainty, anxiety and distress. Our role is to continue supporting survivors throughout that journey, helping them understand their rights and ensuring their voices are heard.

This case study shares the experience of Sarah*, a survivor of organised child sexual exploitation in Rotherham, who has spoken publicly about the impact of recent changes to sentencing on survivors.

Sarah's story

Sarah was just 11 years old when she was targeted by groups of men in Rotherham. Over the following five years, she was groomed, trafficked and sexually abused.

Like many survivors of organised child sexual exploitation, the abuse had a lasting impact on every aspect of her life.

More than two decades later, Sarah found the strength to engage with the criminal justice process. Between 2024 and 2026, she gave evidence in three separate criminal trials at Sheffield Crown Court.

Seven men were convicted of offences against her and received prison sentences ranging from six to 25 years.

Giving evidence required immense courage. Survivors often spend years working with the police, prosecutors and support organisations before reaching the point where offenders are brought to justice.

The impact of changes to the Sentencing Act

After the final trial concluded, Sarah was informed by the Prison and Probation Service that two of the men convicted of offences against her could become eligible for earlier release as a result of changes introduced under the Sentencing Act 2026.

For Sarah, the news was deeply upsetting. She has spoken publicly about feeling as though survivors are being asked to relive their trauma after believing the criminal proceedings had finally come to an end.

Her experience highlights an important issue for many survivors of abuse. Legal proceedings may conclude, but the effects of abuse, and decisions made later about offenders, continue to have a significant emotional impact.

How Switalskis supports survivors

We understand that every survivor's experience is different. Some people want to pursue compensation. Others simply want to understand their legal rights or explore what support is available.
