The case, currently before the courts, involves allegations made by several women who reported they were subjected to sexual abuse as children. The nine defendants were arrested in July and released on conditional bail. Among those charged is Aminur Rahman Choudhury, 58, from Tottenham, north London, who pleaded not guilty to one count of rape. Five other defendants also entered not guilty pleas to a range of offences, including rape, indecent assault, conspiracy to rape, aiding and abetting rape, and causing prostitution. Three further defendants are facing charges but have not yet entered pleas. The matter remains ongoing, with a trial date provisionally scheduled for January 2028.

This is one of many investigations in respect of grooming gangs up and down the country which has been highlighted in the press.

In reality, there are likely to be many survivors who have yet to come forward. Therefore, the true scale of grooming gangs in the UK, likely remains highly underestimated.

Historical abuse cases often present challenges. Many survivors may take years, sometimes decades, before feeling able to disclose what happened to them. The passage of time can make investigations complex but does not minimise the impact abuse can have survivors throughout their lives.

This case highlights the importance of ensuring all allegations of child sexual abuse are investigated thoroughly, regardless of when they are reported. As seen in many historical abuse investigations across the UK, survivors are increasingly coming forward to share their experiences and seek justice.

Survivors encouraged to seek support

For many survivors of child sexual abuse, reporting an incident can be an incredibly difficult step. Feelings of shame, fear, trauma and concerns about not being believed often prevent individuals from coming forward until many years later.

However, survivors should know that support is available. Reporting abuse to the police can be an important step in seeking justice and ensuring that allegations are fully investigated.

In addition to criminal proceedings, survivors may also be able to explore options for pursuing compensation through the civil courts, even where the abuse occurred many years ago.

Depending on the individual circumstances, as survivor may seek compensation from the abuser directly, or the local authority if the individual had been in care at the time of the abuse/exploitation.

It is hoped the independent inquiry into grooming gangs will flag more light on the failings of those over the years and hopefully provide support to survivors who are yet to come forward.
