Jack Mount – former owner and headmaster of Brookside School

Published In: Child Abuse

In 2016 I wrote about Jack Mount, who was facing over 50 charges relating to sex offences against children. The trial, which was due to commence in June 2016, was unable to go ahead due to Jack Mount’s ill health. The Court deemed him unfit to stand trial.

Jack Mount has now died without being brought to justice for the horrific abuse of children which took place over three decades. Jack Mount was the headmaster and owner of Brookside School, a privately-run school in Craven Arms, Shropshire. Brookside School opened in 1965 and closed in 1985.

Mount had numerous charges brought against him including rape and indecent assault which he denied. The alleged abuse spanned many years with over 100 individuals making complaints to the police.

This decision to halt the trial whilst extremely disappointing for complainants who have waited many years for justice through the criminal courts, does not stop individuals from pursuing civil claims for compensation.

We are unable at this time to pursue civil claims as Brookside School which was owned and managed by Jack Mount has no assets. It is possible however to pursue Criminal Injuries Compensation Claim .

For many survivors of abuse, the healing process can only begin when you feel comfortable to talk and share your experiences with others. That's much easier said than done, but thankfully, there are lots of resources available to provide emotional and practical support. While taking the first step is never easy, the resources we've listed here will be available for you when you're ready. There's no rush, but always remember that help is available when you need it.

Everyone who experiences abuse deserves justice. That might mean criminal charges for the person responsible, an institution taking accountability for its failures, or making a historical abuse compensation claim. Some people think that if their abuse happened a long time ago, there isn't anything they can do. However, it's possible to claim compensation even for historical (or non-recent) abuse.
