Medomsley Detention Centre: Prisons and Probation Ombudsman Report
By Caroline Chandler
The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO) is set to publish its report into Medomsley Detention Centre, County Durham, on 13th November 2025. The report is expected to highlight serious failings by both the police and the prison service, including how Neville Husband, a former prison officer and prolific sex abuser, was able to abuse detainees for decades. It will also detail how successive governors failed to stop widespread physical abuse by prison staff over a period of more than 20 years. A press conference and publication of the report will take place in Newcastle.

Medomsley, operating between 1967 and 1986, was intended to deliver a “short sharp shock” to young offenders. In reality, many detainees were subjected to horrendous physical and sexual abuse. Investigations reopened in 2013, leading to three trials in 2018 and 2019. Five former prison officers, Christopher Onslow, John McGee, Alan Bramley, Kevin Blakeley, and Brian Johnson Greenwell, were convicted and sentenced to a total of over 18 years in prison for the abuse of trainees.
Switalskis specialist abuse solicitors have a long history of supporting survivors of Medomsley, securing compensation and formal apologies for hundreds of men who suffered both physical and sexual abuse. The most serious cases have resulted in five-figure settlements.
The Ministry of Justice continues to compensate individuals who were mistreated at Medomsley, including those physically or sexually assaulted. The compensation scheme for physical assault remains open, while Switalskis continues to pursue sexual assault claims through the courts.
It is never too late to seek advice. Many survivors have expressed that authorities were aware of the abuse but failed to act. In 2023, Switalskis took Judicial Review proceedings to press the Government to hold a public inquiry into these failings. The Government agreed, and the PPO is now leading this independent investigation.
