New arrest in Rotherham: historical abuse investigation
By Helen Hughes
As the National Crime Agency (NCA) continues its investigation into non-recent child exploitation and abuse, a fourth former South Yorkshire Police officer has been arrested in connection with historical sexual offences.
The arrest comes as 10 victims have now come forward, revealing allegations of sexual abuse by former police officers. This is the fourth ex-officer to have been arrested since December 2024 in connection with allegations including attempted rape, indecent assault, child sexual abuse and misconduct in a public office. This is part of wider investigations into grooming gangs and child sexual exploitation in the Rotherham area during the 1990’s and early 2000’s.
This investigation also highlights the reality that many survivors of abuse feel as though they cannot come forward until years, and sometimes decades, later.
In 2014, Professor Alexis Jay's inquiry found that at least 1,400 children were abused in the town between 1997 and 2013, exposing significant failures by agencies responsible for safeguarding children.
While the investigation remains ongoing and no criminal charges have yet been brought, the increasing number of people coming forward underlines the importance of investigating historical allegations. It is vital that they are properly investigated and that survivors are supported in seeking justice.
