Negligent heart surgery at Freeman Hospital Newcastle

By Clare Thompson

Published In: Clinical Negligence

An investigation has revealed that serious failings by a heart surgeon at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle contributed to the deaths of seven patients and left another with significant harm.

The surgeon, Karen Booth, carried out complex operations that she was not trained or experienced enough to perform. Reports also found she failed to seek support when needed. Families have described the consequences as devastating, with one man’s loved ones later told his chances of survival would have been far greater if a surgeon with the correct expertise had been present during surgery.

Concerns about Karen Booth’s performance were first raised by colleagues in 2018, but a formal investigation did not begin until 2021. A review of 22 of her cases uncovered repeated surgical errors, poor judgement, and a lack of insight into her own limitations. Despite this, Ms Booth is still employed at Freeman Hospital and is being considered for a return to surgery.

What this means for patients and families

These revelations raise serious questions about patient safety and governance within Freeman Hospital’s cardiac unit. Families who trusted the hospital and its clinicians have been left grieving, without clear answers about how these failures were allowed to continue for so long.

When mistakes happen in heart surgery or any form of hospital care, the impact is life-changing. Families are entitled to:

  • Clear explanations about what went wrong.
  • Accountability from the hospital and medical professionals involved.
  • Access to justice and compensation, where negligence has caused avoidable harm or loss.
