On 25 March 2024, two men were given prison sentences at Norwich Crown Court for their involvement in a fatal car accident.

Both men, Marcin Jablonski (44) and Thomaz Urbaniak (26) were being pursued by the police when the accident happened. They were driving a stolen vehicle and being chased by police cars and a police helicopter along the A143 in Norfolk when they drove through a maize field to attempt to lose the police. As they drove back on to the A143 they crashed into another vehicle causing fatal injuries to Aisatou Mballow-Baldeh (28).

Marcin Jablonski received a 12-year prison sentence and Thomaz Urbaniak only a two-year sentence.

Rosie Dodds , Associate Solicitor who specialises in fatal accident cases reacts to the news.

“It is tragic to see that an innocent bystander has lost her life in this accident. I have sadly represented other families who have lost loved-ones in road traffic accidents occurring during police pursuit. Whilst the families may feel some comfort from the custodial sentences, they often seem short sentences considering the damage they have caused. Often families can feel lost and without a sense of justice.

"I have been able to support families in civil proceedings brought against the driver of the vehicle and help them to receive some compensation for the tragedy they have suffered. Although no amount of money can compensate for the loss of life, families bringing civil proceedings can feel an additional sense of justice and peace.

"It is sad to see that this accident happened as a result of a police pursuit. The Police need to be more mindful to the harm that these pursuits can bring to innocent members of the public.”
