Obaidullah Omari was in his 20s when he abused the 13-14 year old girls after giving them alcohol and drugs. Omari raped one of the girls at his house and in his car multiple times. He raped another girl on one occasion.

Obaidullah Omari, now 46 years old has been found guilty of three counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault. He was found innocent of one count of rape of a child under the age of 13.

He was trialled at Sheffield Crown court and has been sentenced to 19 years in prison.

Operation Stovewood

Both victims in this case came forward to Operation Stovewood. Following their accounts, officers arrested Omari in 2019.
The NCA set up Operation Stovewood to investigate allegations of abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013. Operation Stovewood is the biggest investigation of its kind. As a result of this, 48 people have been convicted, including Omari.
Alan Hastings, NCA senior investigating officer, comments on the impact Operation Stovewood has had on victims. “I’m pleased that Operation Stovewood has been able to secure justice for the women and I hope Omari’s conviction helps them move forward with their lives”

"Immense Courage"

Hastings commended the women’s bravery in coming forward, acknowledging that without their evidence, Omari could not have been convicted.
Hastings states “the victims demonstrated immense courage both in reporting Omari’s crimes and in giving evidence against him”. Hastings further encourages victims of child sexual abuse to “report it to police, no matter how long ago the offending took place”

Everyone who experiences abuse deserves justice. That might mean criminal charges for the person responsible, an institution taking accountability for its failures, or making a historical abuse compensation claim. Some people think that if their abuse happened a long time ago, there isn't anything they can do. However, it's possible to claim compensation even for historical (or non-recent) abuse.
