Merseyside Police have recently confirmed that they will reopen an historic investigation (Operation Care) into Lower Lee Residential School, which was run by Liverpool City Council.

A survivor and former pupil of abuse at Lower Lee has spoken out and his bravery has resulted in the review of this investigation.

Former residents describe being physically, sexually and mentally abused whilst they were residents there.

Two members of staff, Thomas Curbishley and Peter Amundsen who worked at the school have already been convicted and jailed, with Amundsen pleading guilty to three counts of sexual offences against boys which took place over a period of almost 20 years. He was jailed for 12 years in 1999.

During Amundsen’s trial, the Judge said that there was no adequate system of monitoring, scrutiny or background checks of the staff. Lower Lee was subsequently shutdown in 2009.
