Abuse at Helsey Group: Fullerton House, Wilsic Hall and Wheatley House

By Kieran Chatterton, David Greenwood

A number of allegations of assault and mistreatment have been made against staff at three children's homes operated by Hesley Group across Doncaser. Following the decision of South Yorkshire Police and CPS to take no action against care workers at residential homes for vulnerable children, Switalskis solicitors have been instructed by a number of parents seeking more details and accountability.

The most vulnerable children in our society should expect a caring, nurturing and supportive environment. Instead, official reports have found:

  • Physical assaults used to discipline children
  • Dangerous physical restraints
  • Bullying and taunting
  • Inappropriate use of medication
  • Serious neglect of children in care

In January 2023, the BBC concluded a major investigation into two Hesley Group-run children’s homes in Doncaster Wilsic Hall and Fullerton House following serious reports of physical and emotional abuse by staff. Despite over 100 complaints being logged, the homes continued to receive a “Good” rating from Ofsted.

These reports came to light through leaked internal documents and whistleblowing from former staff who had tried to raise the alarm.

A police investigation into the allegations of mistreatment has resulted in no prosecutions.

Our specialist lawyers have investigated and believe not only perpetrators but the whole organisation is responsible for compensating children. There were failures in leadership, management, inadequate staff checks and regulatory failure. We intend to look into whether we can force a review of the decision not to prosecute.

Can I Claim Compensation for Abuse in Care?

If you were in the care of the local authority and experienced neglect or abuse, you may be able to make a claim for compensation. This includes:

  • Where the local authority failed to protect you from harm
  • Where their actions stopped others from protecting you
  • Where the abuser was under their control or employment
  • Where they created a dangerous situation

Claims can also be made for abuse in foster care, schools, and other institutions.

The legal process can be complex, but our experienced Abuse Solicitors are here to help you understand your rights and support you through every step.

Why Take Legal Action?

For many survivors, making a legal claim isn’t about money it’s about being heard, recognised, and holding those responsible to account. A civil claim can also help fund treatment or therapy to support your recovery.

We’ll always take the time to explain the process and your options, without any pressure to move forward unless you feel ready.
