Successful defence of distribution of drugs for a victim of organised crime
By Michael Devlin
We successfully defended a courier who was targeted by an organised crime group to transport over 50kg of cocaine and cannabis. The team uncovered evidence that our client had been targeted, coerced and threatened by individuals.

The client was stopped mid-route, aggressively confronted, and accused of theft and asked for a parcel. The incident was reported to both our client’s employer and the police, as the client feared for their safety. This clearly indicated that our client was acting under duress, not complicity.
We demonstrated that our client had been drawn into a wider criminal network without fully understanding the scale or danger of what he was involved in. Detailed analysis of phone evidence and work logs, showed that our client was being directed and monitored, not acting of his own volition.
Crucially, we obtained disclosure that similar incidents involving parcel thefts and threats had already been reported to the police. This further evidenced that our client’s experience was part of a broader pattern.
Our defence dismantled the prosecution’s case and secured an outcome that recognised our client as a victim of modern slavery, not a willing participant in an organised crime network.
