Successful criminal defence in high-profile human trafficking Crown Court trials
By Michael Devlin
Our client was successfully defended from multiple serious allegations of human trafficking and controlling prostitution in a complex and high-profile eight-week Crown Court trial.

Our client’s husband, his brother and his sister-in-law received almost thirty years in prison for arranging the travel of women to the UK to coerce them into prostitution for personal gain.
To support the defence of our client, our criminal defence solicitors had to analyse over a thousand pages of social media communications, thousands of mobile phone messages, images and videos. The thorough analysis of the evidence allowed us to substantiate that our client had limited involvement and very little knowledge of the trafficking and prostitution. The role they played was in the administration and organisation of the three main co-conspirators.
We persuaded the judge that a custodial sentence wasn’t needed as our client didn’t pose a risk to the public or the women. She was spared an immediate custodial sentence, in stark contrast to her co-defendants.
The client was found guilty of one count of conspiracy to control prostitution for gain. She was sentenced to a 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work and 5 days of rehabilitation.
In complex criminal prosecutions, every defendant’s role must be assessed individually. Careful evidence analysis, strategic case preparation and persuasive advocacy can make a substantial difference to the outcome.
This outcome reflected the strength of our arguments and the level of expertise and advocacy given throughout complex proceedings.
