A routine ride and a lasting injury: The importance of expert legal help

Most of us don’t think twice about the everyday activities we do. Cycling to work, heading out for some exercise, or simply travelling from A to B, these are routine parts of life. But sometimes, in a split second, something completely unexpected can happen that changes everything.

This was the reality for one of our clients.

Cycling accident

A split second that changes everything

Our client was cycling along a busy road in London when a vehicle to his right suddenly moved across his path without warning. With no time to react safely, he had to swerve and brake sharply. The result was devastating, he was thrown over his handlebars and onto the road.

What began as a normal journey quickly became a serious cycling accident with long-lasting consequences.

The serious nature of “everyday” injuries

Rosie Dodds , specialist personal injury solicitor handling the case, commented: “Cycling accidents are often underestimated, but the injuries can be severe. In this case, our client suffered a displaced fracture of the left hip, a significant injury that needed urgent surgical treatment.

“He initially underwent a procedure to stabilise the fracture using metalwork. Unfortunately, complications followed. The fracture site collapsed, leading to a difference in leg length and changes to the hip structure.

“Ultimately, he required a total hip replacement, a major operation that, while successful, permanently altered his life.”

Although he made a good recovery overall, he continues to experience ongoing symptoms that are likely to remain with him long term. Activities he once enjoyed, particularly higher-impact exercise like running, may now be limited.”

Looking beyond the immediate impact

One of the most important aspects of a personal injury claim is ensuring that it doesn’t just reflect what has already happened, but also what will happen in the future.

In our client’s case, medical evidence confirmed that he will likely need revision hip surgery later in life, at an estimated cost of around £20,000. This is a crucial factor, without proper legal representation future needs like this can easily be overlooked or undervalued.

When the responsible party cannot be traced

To make matters more complex, the driver responsible for the accident failed to stop and was never identified.

This is where specialist legal knowledge becomes essential.

We pursued the claim through the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) Untraced Drivers Agreement, a scheme designed to compensate victims of accidents involving unidentified drivers. These claims can be technical and require experience to navigate successfully.

Securing the right outcome

Through careful handling of the case, detailed medical evidence, and a clear understanding of both current and future losses, we secured a £100,000 settlement for our client.

This compensation reflects:

  • The seriousness of his injuries
  • The impact on his daily life and activities
  • His recovery period and time off work
  • Ongoing symptoms
  • The cost of future surgery

Why the right solicitor makes all the difference

This case highlights an important message: even a seemingly routine activity can lead to life-changing injuries. When it does, having the right legal support is critical.

An experienced personal injury solicitor will:

  • Fully investigate how the accident happened
  • Identify all possible routes to compensation (even when the other party cannot be traced)
  • Work with medical experts to understand long-term consequences
  • Ensure future costs — not just immediate losses — are properly accounted for
  • Fight to maximise the compensation you receive

Final thoughts

No one expects a normal day to end in serious injury . But when it does, the impact can be physical, emotional, and financial, both now and in the future.

If you or someone you know has been injured, especially in circumstances where fault may not be straightforward, seeking expert legal advice early can make a significant difference to the outcome.

Because it’s not just about compensation, it’s about securing the support you need for the years ahead.
