Investigation finds unsafe and substandard gynaecological care at Derby and Burton hospitals

By Chris Gresswell-Green

A new report has found that women treated by former NHS gynaecologist Daniel Hay at the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust (UHDB) were subjected to substandard and unsafe care that caused lasting harm.

Between 2015 and 2018, Mr Hay performed procedures and recommended major surgery without proper consent or clinical justification. Many women have been left with severe physical injuries, trauma, and a lifetime of health complications.

Findings of the investigation

The independent review contacted 325 women who received treatment from Mr Hay. It found:

  • Risky practices and shortcuts in surgery and treatment.
  • Patients subjected to major procedures, including hysterectomies, without being told about less invasive alternatives.
  • Failures in communication, with women often left without explanations about their care.
  • Long-term impacts on patients’ physical health, mental wellbeing, relationships, and careers.

Some women described their experiences as leaving them “traumatised” and “angry,” while others said they were made to feel that major surgery was their only option.

Response from the Trust

The Trust has apologised to those affected, admitting its communication and support for patients fell far below expected standards. It has since pledged to improve:

  • Consent procedures
  • Oversight of clinical practice
  • Post-procedure reviews

Despite this, campaigners and lawyers say concerns about Mr Hay were ignored for too long, and lessons still need to be learned to prevent this happening again.

Mr Hay retired in 2020 citing mental health concerns, relinquished his medical licence in 2021, and remains under police investigation.
