Switalskis welcomes NCA involvement in police abuse investigation but maintains concern over IOPC oversight

Switalskis has welcomed the decision by South Yorkshire Police (SYP) to transfer its investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse, corruption, and the facilitation of abuse by former officers to the National Crime Agency (NCA).

The decision follows the release of a report by Switalskis earlier this year, which highlighted serious concerns raised by survivors of child sexual exploitation in Rotherham. The report was based on civil casework and included testimony from 30 women. Among those, five alleged that they were sexually abused by serving SYP officers. Other allegations involved officers supplying Class A drugs in exchange for sex, assaults in custody, and the destruction of victim statements.

Redacted testimonials from 30 women were submitted to SYP with the consent of the survivors. However, Switalskis reports that efforts to raise these concerns were not acted upon, and many survivors withdrew from the police-led investigation, citing a lack of trust in the process.

The firm describes the transfer of the investigation to the NCA as a positive step. However, it remains concerned about the role of the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which is overseeing the investigation. Earlier this year, whistleblowers raised concerns regarding the IOPC’s previous handling of Operation Linden.

Amy Clowrey , director and solicitor in Switalskis’ child abuse compensation team, said: “We are pleased that South Yorkshire Police (SYP) has decided to hand the investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse, corruption, and the facilitation of abuse by former SYP officers to the National Crime Agency (NCA). However, we remain concerned that the investigation is still being directed by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), given the concerns raised by whistleblowers in relation to Operation Linden earlier this year. Nevertheless, we view this as a step in the right direction and hope that more survivors will now feel able to come forward to the NCA.”

Switalskis continues to support survivors through civil claims and legal advice and remains committed to ensuring allegations of serious institutional failings are properly investigated. The firm is also encouraging anyone affected to seek support through appropriate specialist services, such as The Survivors Trust.
