Supporting people with cerebral palsy

October 6 is World Cerebral Palsy Day - a time to celebrate and raise awareness of those living with cerebral palsy, while also highlighting the nature of the condition. At Switalskis, we are proud to support and employ colleagues with disabilities, including cerebral palsy, and to stand alongside individuals and families affected by cerebral palsy, particularly where it has arisen as a result of medical negligence.

What is cerebral palsy

is the most common physical disability worldwide, affecting an estimated 18 million people. No two cases are the same - it is a complex condition that exists on a spectrum. can affect movement, speech, vision, ability, balance and stamina. It may also impact eating, drinking and managing everyday needs. The effects can be wide-ranging and lifelong, influencing everything from childhood development and education to employment, housing and plans for later life. 

The most common causes of are a lack of oxygen to the brain, or bleeding on the brain, at or around the time of birth. Other causes can include infections during pregnancy, meningitis, or serious head injuries.

There is currently no cure for but there are treatments that can help manage and improve symptoms. These may include:

  • Botox injections
  • Physiotherapy
  • Orthotics such as splints or specialist footwear
  • Occupational therapy
  • Hydrotherapy

World Cerebral Palsy Day is an opportunity for everyone to learn more and share knowledge about the condition.

is not a disease, nor is it genetic. Having does not necessarily mean a person is cognitively disabled, or that their disability will be severe. 

It also does not automatically mean that someone cannot live independently, care for themselves, contribute to society, enjoy sports or maintain physical fitness.

How you can make a difference

  1. Educate yourself and others: Share what you learn about cerebral palsy with friends and family to help spread understanding.
  2. Support local initiatives: Get involved with organisations that support individuals with disabilities, through volunteering, donations, or advocacy.
  3. Raise awareness on social media: Use your platforms to share information, personal stories, or resources related to CP.
  4. Attend events: Participate in local or virtual events on World Cerebral Palsy Day to connect with others and show your support.
