In June 2022, Hopkinson had been out drinking in a restaurant when he drove through a residential area of Leeds at speeds more than 100mph. He had his 8-year-old daughter, Isobella, in the car with him when he crashed into Alice Birchall’s car. She was only 22 years old and suffered critical injuries, resulting in her death 2 days later.

Hopkinson’s daughter, Isobella suffered facial injuries including a broken nose and fractured eye socket.

Det Con Lindsay Pickles, of West Yorkshire Police, said after the sentencing, “By taking to the wheel while over limit that night, Hopkinson’s actions caused the death of a young woman and untold devastation to her friends and family.”

Rosie Dodds, associate solicitor, who specialises in fatal accident cases reacts to the news.

“It’s so sad to hear that a young woman has lost her life in this accident. I have worked for a number of families who have to deal with the devastating consequences of losing a loved-one in this horrid manner. I hope that Mr Hopkinson’s custodial sentence will bring some sense of justice to the family.

“I have represented several families in civil proceedings brought against drivers who caused fatal accidents. Although no amount of money can compensate for the loss of a loved one, civil proceedings can bring a sense of justice and closure. I hope to help families navigate this process and support them, as best as I can, through the aftermath of a terrible event.”

Friends cheering and riding roller coaster at amusement park

Theme park operators have a legal responsibility to keep you safe. The law sets out a strict duty of care in the Occupiers' Liability Act 1957, which means that an amusement park's owners, operators and staff must take reasonable steps to ensure the premises are safe. This includes everything from fixing broken paths and securing heavy items to testing and verifying the safety of rides. If they ignore a hazard, they breach their duty and any injuries caused by this failure may give rise to a personal injury claim, including claims for serious or life-changing injuries.
