Celebrating Black History Month at Switalskis
By Jennifer Heckingbottom
On 16 October, to mark Black History Month, our EDI Committee welcomed Professor Uzo Iwobi CBE for an inspiring lunchtime session that left a real impression across the firm.

Professor Iwobi is a British-Nigerian solicitor and leading equalities practitioner. She has served as the Specialist Policy Adviser on Equalities to the Welsh Government, is an Honorary Fellow at the University of Wales Trinity St David, and is the founder and former Chief Executive of Race Council Cymru. She also holds the position of Vice President at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.
Born in Nigeria, Uzo came to the UK as a lawyer and has faced her share of racial challenges and discrimination. Over the years, she has become a passionate advocate for equality and diversity, advising government, influencing policy and working tirelessly to promote fairness and inclusion.
During the session, Uzo spoke with honesty, warmth and humour about her own experiences and those of her family. She discussed the importance of Black History Month, the obstacles she has overcome, and the many achievements of Black historical figures whose contributions have shaped the world we live in today.
Almost 70 colleagues from across the business joined the live event to listen, reflect and take part in an open discussion. Uzo’s positivity, humility and powerful message left a lasting impression on everyone who attended.
As Uzo reminded us, Black history is not something to acknowledge only in October, but an important part of our shared story every day. Black History Month itself began in the US in the 1920s and was first celebrated in the UK in 1987. It provides an opportunity for everyone to share, celebrate and better understand the influence of Black heritage and culture.
At Switalskis, we believe everyone should feel welcome, valued and celebrated for who they are. Events like this, hosted by our EDI Committee, help spark conversation, encourage collaboration and create space for every voice to be heard.
A huge thank you to Professor Uzo Iwobi for sharing her insight and experience, and to the EDI Committee for organising such a memorable and thought-provoking session for our team.
