More about Toby

We asked Toby:

Q: What does your role involve?
A: I help separating couples to deal with the practical and legal issues surrounding their decision to end their relationship. This can include assistance with legally ending a marriage or civil partnership, issues surrounding the financial implications of their separation and arrangements for the care of any children.

Q: What can clients expect from you/like about you?
A calm and constructive approach – I find I am able to take the heat out of a situation rather than inflame it – as well as a clear objective opinion on the best route to take.

Q: What is the most interesting aspect of your role?
A: I enjoy working as a collaborative lawyer because it has taught me how to better understand the dynamics within a separating couple. Any progress is made with both parties being around the same table, providing better insight into my client’s and their former spouse or partner’s wishes, and hopefully enabling them to reach a settlement that is more closely tailored to their specific needs.

Q: What are your interests outside of work?
A: I train regularly at a traditional type of karate called Shotokan (I am a black belt, first dan). I usually train twice a week with both my sons at a dojo in Chesterfield. I also sporadically undertake triathlons (very slowly). I am due to compete in the Hathersage Hilly at the end of July.

I am also on the board of trustees and chair of a local charity called Zest. Based in the Upperthorpe and Netherthorpe areas of Sheffield, Zest provides physical activities though its pool and gym facilities, library resources as well as employment, health and wellbeing support for the local community. It is a vital and very well used resource and helps with social cohesion and focus in those areas of the city.
