Experience

Tim works closely with Managing Director John Durkan and the wider management team to help the business to operate effectively and meet and exceed the needs of our clients. Having successfully grown a legal business over many years, Tim now works with staff across the business to help them work effectively and grow their departments.

Tim has also been a trustee of Martin House Children’s Hospice at Boston Spa since 2013 and has chaired their board of trustees since 2017.

Tim began his career in the legal profession in 1980, qualifying as a solicitor in 1982. He practised as a residential development lawyer and was recognised in both the Legal 500 and Chambers legal guides. He acted for many leading national and regional housebuilders on site acquisitions, developing a particular expertise in option and overage agreements.

In his time at Shulmans LLP, Tim rose to the position of Managing Partner. He held this role for 26 years, helping the firm to grow from £1m revenue to over £18m. He twice won the ‘Managing Partner of the Year’ award at the Yorkshire Legal Awards (most recently in 2019). Shulmans LLP was then acquired by Knights plc for £20m in April 2020. Tim joined Switalskis in September 2020 as Chief Operating Officer.

More about Tim

We asked Tim:

What do you enjoy about your role?

Having helped to build my previous firm almost from its early days to a UK 200 corporate law firm employing over 250 people, I relish the opportunity to apply the experience I have gained over the years to a new setting and challenge.

Having spent almost all my working life in my last firm, one of the key elements of a new role for me was to work with people who shared my approach to business – that it’s about more than just making money. I see one of the main roles of the management team as being to support other colleagues in the business and to ensure that they have the tools and working environment to do a great job for their clients (because that’s what lawyers love doing most).

What drew you to the sort of work that you do?

I combined some client work with my management role in my last firm, but my role at Switalskis enables me to focus exclusively on supporting the management team. I still have the benefit of having worked as a lawyer for many years, so hope that this combination will enable me to bring a good balance to the role.

Whilst I always enjoyed client work (and still have many friends in the housebuilding industry) it’s refreshing to think that I don’t now have to read or draft long contracts!

What are your interests outside of work?

I grew up in Bradford, went to university in Leeds and then moved to York, where I still live. I have no plans to go further east. I am married to a social worker and have two grown-up children.

I have played cricket for many years with the Romany Cricket Club, of which I am a past captain and am now a Vice President and very occasional player. I still play five-a-side football, so make various excuses to avoid alternative engagements on Thursday evenings.
