Our previous conference
The Brain Injury at Birth Conference was held on 1 May 2025 at the Leeds Marriott Hotel, bringing together professionals from healthcare, rehabilitation, legal, and therapeutic fields. Centred around Sam’s story, the event explored the challenges families face after a birth injury and the vital role of multidisciplinary support in rehabilitation, education, legal advocacy, and trauma recovery.
Sessions covered topics such as managing complex health needs, early intervention, navigating legal and ethical issues, supporting families through trauma, and the transformative role of therapies. Breakout sessions led by Switalskis solicitors provided practical insights into child contact orders, Court of Protection decisions, safeguarding, and cross-disciplinary claims. The conference offered both learning and networking opportunities, highlighting the importance of holistic collaboration in improving outcomes for children with complex needs and their families.

Dr. David Sharpe KC - 12 Kings Bench Walk
Dr David Sharpe KC specialises in sport, clinical negligence, professional negligence, serious personal injury, construction, inquests & inquiries and property law. David practices within all areas of England & Wales and works for claimants and defendants.
He practiced as a doctor to Consultant level in Emergency Medicine (and is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons and Royal College of Physicians) prior to qualifying as a Barrister and retains an exceptional knowledge of scientific, medical and technical matters relevant to his current legal practice.
With a unique blend of expertise in medicine and law, Dr David Sharpe KC is a distinguished barrister who has established an exceptional career in sports law. His extensive experience and knowledge in the medical field, coupled with an impressive array of sports-related roles and accomplishments, sets him apart as a leading authority in the field.
David has conducted cases at first instance and appellate level in the following sports:- football, rugby, boxing, equestrian, cycling, athletics, triathlon/ironman, judo, golf, ice-hockey, swimming, para-sports, sailing, floorball, Aussie-rules football, and angling.

Dr Michael Grey – Reader in Rehabilitation Neuroscience
Michael studied Physics at the University of British Columbia before diving into Biomechanics for his master’s at Simon Fraser University. He earned his PhD in Biomedical Science and Engineering from Aalborg University in Denmark in 2002. Since then, he’s held research roles across Europe, including in Denmark, Finland, and the UK, and joined Loughborough University in 2023 as a Reader in Rehabilitation Neuroscience.
He’s passionate about brain health and concussion research, serving as a trustee for the UK Acquired Brain Injury Forum and advisor to groups like the Professional Footballers Association and Concussion Legacy Foundation UK.
Michael’s work has been published widely, covering topics from biomarkers in concussion recovery to how motor learning shapes brain plasticity.
Ryan Price - Heads Up Therapies
Ryan founded Heads Up Therapies in 2016 with the goal of offering friendly, holistic Occupational Therapy that looks at the whole person, not just the problem. He takes an open and flexible approach to assessment and rehab, helping people regain confidence and independence in everyday life.
Ryan has developed a range of fun and engaging rehab programmes, including the popular Brain Injury OT Football and Golf Groups, where clients can work on cognitive, social, physical, and emotional skills through sport.
His role covers everything from cognitive and daily living assessments to creating support plans, training families and support workers, and finding creative ways to make daily routines more meaningful. Whether it’s improving memory, planning, social skills, or leisure engagement, Ryan is all about helping people build structure, confidence, and connection.

Steven Caulker - Former Premier League & International Footballer, Mental Health & Rehab Advocate
Steven Caulker is a former Premier League and England international footballer whose career has spanned Spurs, Liverpool, Cardiff, Dundee and beyond.
Beyond the pitch, Steven has become a powerful voice for change in sport speaking openly about his lived experiences with addiction, depression, and recovery. Entering rehab at just 19, and navigating the highs and lows of elite football under immense pressure, Steven offers an honest and inspiring perspective on what it really means to recover, rebuild, and return.
At this conference, Steven will share:
- His journey through injury, rehab and addiction.
- The challenges athletes face off the pitch, and how legal and rehab professionals can better support them.
- Why mental health, recovery, and resilience must be part of the future legal and medical landscape in sport.
Steven’s story is raw, human, and deeply relevant to anyone working at the intersection of sport, law, and rehabilitation’.

Maggie Sergent - Community Case Management
Maggie is Co-Director of Community Case Management (CCM), a leading provider of specialist rehabilitation for people with severe injuries across the UK and beyond. Recognised with both a Lifetime Achievement Award and Medico-Legal Provider of the Year in 2017, she’s dedicated her career to helping people rebuild their lives after catastrophic injury.
A founding member of BABICM, Maggie continues to play an active role on its Council and contributes regularly to national and international conferences on brain injury and case management. She’s also a published author and respected expert in her field.
Driven by her belief that life is for living, Maggie founded local nursing and charity groups supporting brain injury survivors to take on amazing challenges, from skiing and surfing to safaris and volunteering abroad. Her passion is making sure everyone, no matter their injury, gets the chance to live life to the fullest.

Colette Shaw - STEPS Prosthetics
Colette qualified in 1999 with a first-class degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics at University of Strathclyde, Glasgow. She completed an MSc in Rehabilitation Studies in 2010, also at University of Strathclyde, and has over 25 years’ experience in the prosthetic industry including 15 years clinical experience in the NHS and private clinics.
Colette is the co-founder of STEPS Prosthetics Ltd in Sheffield and is passionate about providing the highest levels of care and building strong relationships with each individual client, and their referrer, to truly understand their needs, goals and aspirations.

Sarah Drury – STEPS Prosthetics
completed a Certificate of Higher Education in Amputee Rehabilitation at the University of Bradford.
Sarah is a highly experienced physiotherapist with over 20 years in amputee rehabilitation across NHS and private sectors. Specialising in complex trauma amputation and prosthetic technologies, Sarah supports patients from inpatient care through to outpatient recovery. A member of BACPAR, she stays current with advancements in limb absence rehabilitation and has presented her research at national conferences, including the Vascular Surgical Society.
