Last week Doncaster Chamber hosted its first ever Women in Business conference, building on the success of the quarterly Women in Business lunches.

This inspiring event showcased three panels of amazing speakers highlighting and addressing important topics covering Overcoming Adversity, Embracing Equity and Breaking Stereotypes, leaving those who attended inspired and empowered.

The fantastic panellists shared their personal journeys and achievements through their successful careers. They provided their honest advice and very helpful hints and tips on how to be the best version of you. Their honest portrayal of the ups and downs that they have faced were relatable. Each talk emphasised that anyone can face aversity but still have every chance of being successful.

 Overcoming adversity

The conference was hosted by Amelia Banful, who herself instilled confidence in the audience. The panel discussions were facilitated by the talented Felicity King and Sarah Naylor. The first session covered the topic of Overcoming Adversity with the panel including Rebecca Dickenson, Abi Hookway, Leana Coopoosamy-Pearson and Karen Betts.

The areas covered were deeply personal and really resonated. It highlighted that there are many adversities that so many people face in the process of achieving success. It is important that these stories are shared and for people to know that they are not alone.

Some of the top tips from the session included:

  • Do not underestimate your strength. Overcoming adversity really spotlights your true potential.
  • If you are thinking of trying something new, believe in yourself and do it! The moment that you start to believe in yourself will be a great turning point.
  • If you are having a tough time or have experienced difficulties, please share them. You never know, what you have to say another person may need to hear.

 Embracing equity in the workplace

A further session discussing Embracing Equity in the Workplace stressed the importance of treating everyone fairly and being kind. Layla Young perfectly explained how we should listen to others and that everyone should be allowed an even playing field. The analogy used by Layla of “Equality is giving everyone a shoe, but Equity is giving everyone a shoe that fits” effectively illustrates the significance of equity in the workplace.

Some of the top tips from the session included:

  • Great value should be placed on sitting with someone and listening to them. Be genuinely interested in the people around you.
  • Believe in people and be on the journey with them.

Breaking stereotypes

Following this, a discussion on Breaking Stereotypes promoted that we are each other’s biggest supporter and advocate. In a society full of competitiveness, we should embrace this and help to build people up. Zoe Hands, Charlie Dean, Kathryn Kelly and Julie Carrier shared advice that they would give to their younger selves and agreed that others perceptions of you should not limit your ambitions and success. I would agree that when faced with “no you can’t”, take on the challenge and show what you are capable of.

Some of the top tips from the session included:

  • Do not let self-doubt stop you or limit your ambitions.
  • Be kind to yourself and do not be too proud to ask for help when needed.
  • Take a moment to stop and reflect on your achievements. Be proud of those achievements.

Outside of the panel sessions, Doncaster Chamber provided a great environment for networking and for the valuable discussions to continue. With the thought-provoking conversations on important issues that often go unnoticed and Doncaster Chambers’ excellent choice of panellists, I hope that there are many more events like this to come.
