Death of Nottingham child abuse campaigner Mickey Summers

By Carole Spencer

Published In: Child Abuse

The Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) published its report into the abuse of children in the care of the Nottinghamshire Councils in July 2019. It provides a compelling and damning indictment of the Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils who failed to learn ‘from their mistakes despite decades of evidence of failure to protect children in care’

A core participant at the IICSA inquiry was the tireless campaigner Mickey Summers and it is very sad to hear of his recent death.

Mr Summers was certainly a thorn in the side of the Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire County Councils over many years whilst he protested loudly and repeatedly about the suffering of himself and others during their childhoods in care. In doing so, he will undoubtedly have inspired many more to rightly come forward and tell their stories.

His high profile and selfless campaigning on behalf of all the Nottinghamshire victims and survivors will have had a greater impact and been appreciated more than he could ever have imagined when he started his campaign back in 2003.
