John Durkan is based primarily in Wakefield and Leeds, but spends time at all of our offices.
Unusually for a Managing Director in a legal firm, John is a Chartered Accountant by profession. Prior to joining Switalskis in 2001, he specialised in advising law firms on meeting the many requirements placed upon them by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. As Managing Director at Switalskis he draws extensively on his vast experience in this area, in addition to ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the practice, and planning for the firm’s future development.
John joined Switalskis in 2001, and since then has guided the firm through several mergers, the addition of eight offices, and the development of many new specialist legal departments. However, it was not until March 2009 that John’s exceptional contribution to the firm’s growth and development could be formally acknowledged through an appropriately senior job title. The Legal Services Act 2007 changed the law so that from March 2009, non-lawyers could for the first time apply to be approved by the SRA as law firm partners. Under the new provisions, John became one of the country’s first non-lawyers to be approved by the SRA.
John’s many achievements at Switalskis were publicly acknowledged in 2013, when he was a highly commended finalist in the Managing Partner of the Year category at the Yorkshire Lawyer Awards.
