What are my responsibilities as the executor of a will or the administrator of someone's estate?

 

Someone close to me has died without leaving a valid will - what happens now?

When someone dies without making a valid will this is known as dying 'intestate'.   There are strict rules about who can deal with that person's affairs. This is usually a close relative (if there is one), and more than one person could have an equal right to do so.   There are also rules about who can inherit.  The Rules of Intestacy which are set out in the Administration of Estates Act 1925. A solicitor can explain how these rules work and help you to proceed with administering the estate.
