Switalskis Solicitor shortlisted for Top Award

Razia Jogi
Razia Jogi, Finalist in the Law Society Excellence Awards

We are delighted to announce that Razia Jogi, our Head of Family Law in Bradford, has been shortlisted in the category of Solicitor of the Year (Private Practice) for this year's Law Society Excellence Awards.

Razia is nominated for her sound and thorough academic approach to the law, which she combines with a rare and inspiring commitment to her clients that has earned her the respect and admiration of those she works with in the legal and not-for-profit sectors.  As a family law specialist dealing primarily with domestic abuse cases, Razia has established a reputation in Bradford as a solicitor that vulnerable women fleeing violent situations, particularly those from the city’s Asian communities, can really depend on.

Razia is dedicated to empowering victims of domestic abuse who are isolated and psychologically torn due to the violent and sometimes life threatening behaviour they have fled, and tirelessly works towards this aim alongside colleagues at women’s support agencies and refuges with whom she has built strong relationships based on the trust and confidence she inspires. She has a compassionate understanding of the fear and intimidation felt by vulnerable women, particularly for those whose first language is not English, taking the decision to speak out in Court about their experiences of abuse. However, Razia ensures that wherever possible her clients do speak out, thus enabling them to use the law to bring the abuse they have suffered to an end.

In addition to her work with individuals who have fled abusive situations, Razia has this year co-authored a book on the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007, which provides essential information for legal professionals on the background to the legislation, and offers practical guidance on making applications for, and responding to, Forced Marriage Protection Orders.  Razia has also been a key driving force behind the setting up of a conference on Forced Marriages to be held in Bradford in November 2009, which is aimed at legal professionals, social workers and teachers, and those in the not-for-profit sector.  One of its aims is to raise awareness of the Act and the help available to those working to support victims of forced marriage. Conference places are being offered free of charge to workers in the not-for-profit sector, in order to ensure that there is a strong awareness of the legislation amongst those on the ‘front line’ supporting victims of forced marriage and related abuses.

The winners of the Law Society Excellence Awards will be announced on 22 October at a ceremony in London.
