Switalskis voices concern over proposed legal aid cuts

Switalskis Solicitors has expressed concern following the announcement of government proposals to reform legal aid.

The proposed cuts include reduced provision in family law, housing law and welfare benefits work.

Switalskis holds legal aid contracts in six areas of West Yorkshire, covering nine different areas of law. The firm is also a provider of legal aid funded Community Legal Advice Services in Wakefield District and the East Riding of Yorkshire, where it works in partnership with Citizens Advice Bureaux.

Michael Kennedy, Partner of Switalskis Solicitors, said: "All at Switalskis are deeply concerned at the government's proposal to hollow out the provision of civil legal aid. This at a time when the need for family law, welfare rights and housing law is at its greatest."

He continued:

"However, we must emphasise that these are proposed policies. They will not come in for some time, and may not come in as outlined. We wouldn't want people to think they couldn't get advice now. We suggest that those in need of advice contact one of our six offices across West Yorkshire, or their local Community Legal Advice office, where our team can assess whether they are eligible for legal aid."
