Lorrette Law announced as new SRA Board member

Switalskis Senior Partner, Lorrette Law, has been announced as the final Solicitor member of the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Board whose term will begin on 1st January 2010. The SRA is responsible for the regulation of Solicitors practising in England and Wales. Its Board, which consists of nine Solicitors and seven non-Solicitors, oversees the work of the Board, assisted by eleven committees focused on areas like Ethics, Quality Assurance, and Equality and Diversity.
The current Board will step down on 31st December 1999 when their four-year term comes to an end.
A Higher Court Advocate specialising in care proceedings, Lorrette has 20 years' practice experience in Yorkshire, and as the Senior Partner of one of the UK's largest legal aid practices, is well-placed to represent the interests of Yorkshire's high street firms, and legal aid lawyers alike.
Lorrette Law joins the SRA Board during a period of development and change in the provision of legal services. The first provisions of the Legal Services Act 2007, which make changes to the way that law firms can be owned, came into effect on 31st March 2009. Law firms can now be up to 25% owned by non-Solicitors, and Switalskis was one of the first firms in the UK to appoint a non-Solicitor Partner on 1st April 2009.
Further provisions ofthe Act, which have yet to come into effect, will make further changes to the law surrounding law firm ownership. As part of the SRA Board, Lorrette Law will play a crucial role in determining how the regulation of solicitors develops with planned changes in the law.
